I am a seasoned pavement expert with over 30 years of experience in pavement engineering, forensic engineering and project management.
My extensive background spans both asphalt and concrete pavements across the public and private sectors, where I have contributed to the success of major infrastructure projects under Direct Design, D&C, and Alliance forms of contract. I have honed my skills in identifying my client’s needs, providing actionable insights that lead to the development of resilient infrastructure across a diverse range of environments, including roads, highways, port pavements, airport pavements, and industrial pavements.
My extensive experience in asphalt and concrete pavements covers all aspects of major infrastructure projects, where I have served as a designer, reviewer, independent verifier, proof engineer, independent certifier and technical advisor. My collaborative style has led to my successful involvement in many of the major transport infrastructure upgrades delivered in Australia over the past 20 years. I have a strong track record of delivering successful outcomes for projects ranging from highway upgrades to complex airport runway design reviews, always prioritizing durability, sustainability, and cost-efficiency.
Throughout my career, I have been deeply involved in consulting and expert advisory services for new pavement construction, pavement maintenance, pavement rehabilitation, pavement recycling and forensic analysis of pavement failures, offering my technical expertise to clients in need of comprehensive pavement reports. My work includes preparing expert witness reports for litigation, insurance claims, and dispute resolution, where my ability to apply ‘Fact Based Thinking’ has been instrumental in diagnosing complex pavement issues and developing innovative, cost-effective solutions.
I am passionate about advancing the field of pavement engineering and remain committed to continuous learning and professional growth. My journey has taken me around the world, where I have led seven international study tours focused on the latest advancements in pavement technology. These tours have allowed me to stay at the forefront of industry trends and innovations, ensuring that my clients benefit from cutting-edge solutions.
Over the past decade, I have concentrated on identifying optimal value in pavement solutions and implementing sustainable solutions for high-quality infrastructure. My contributions to the industry have been recognized through key roles, including as a Fellow of Engineers Australia, a member of the AustStab National Technical Working Group, and leadership/Board positions with the International Society for Concrete Pavements. During 2012 to 2015 I served as President of the Australian Society for Concrete Pavements. My involvement in these organizations reflects my commitment to the broader pavement engineering community and my dedication to driving positive change in the industry.
In addition to my work on traditional pavement materials, I have developed expertise in the use of geosynthetics within pavements. My work in mechanistic empirical design methods for flexible pavements, incorporating multi-axial geogrids, has provided new avenues for enhancing pavement performance. I have also been instrumental in the implementation of design procedures for glass fibre reinforced polymer bars in continuously reinforced concrete pavements in Australia, contributing to advancements that improve pavement longevity and resilience.
My commitment to the industry is further demonstrated by the various technical guides I have prepared for Transport for NSW. These guides have become essential resources for engineers and contractors working within the state, helping to set the standard for quality and performance.
In 2016, I took the next step in my career by establishing my own consulting practice, dedicated to providing specialised pavement advisory services. This venture builds on my extensive experience, including my roles as Technical Director at Aurecon, a global pavement role at AECOM, and previously with Transport for NSW (formerly RMS & RTA) in which I left a lasting impact on asphalt technology, helping to shape the future of pavement engineering in Australia and beyond.
